Soil is a valuable resource – which is why we treat it as such. Thanks to our remediation services, we are able to breathe new life into contaminated sites so they can be used again. Moreover, the general quality of the soil is improved at the same time. Offering a full package of services, we take on all the tasks required for such remediation projects – from the planning and analysis stages, to the demolition and excavation work, all the way through to the logistics, recycling and documentation.
REMONDIS' company, REMEX ProTerra, treats 1.7 million tonnes of soil every year
The old brownfield site has been transformed into an attractive residential area surrounded by water and open spaces
Essen is a perfect example of how many towns in Germany's industrial Ruhr area are transforming themselves – moving away from their industrial roots to become centres of culture. Indeed, Essen was named "European Green Capital 2017" by the European Commission in recognition of the pioneering role that the city authorities are playing to reinvent itself as a 'green city'. REMONDIS is proud to have played a role in this transition. We helped by cleaning up a derelict 45,000m2 industrial estate. To be able to do this, we had to excavate and treat 92,000m3 of contaminated earth. And this work was well worth its while. The cleaned-up land has been transformed into a high quality residential area with 220 homes. And this is just one example of the many sustainable land remediation projects being carried out by REMONDIS.
Mineral waste in Germany
Did you know that building and demolition work creates more than half of all the waste produced in Germany? According to the Federal Statistical Office, the country generates a total 380 million tonnes of waste – and 199 million tonnes of this is from the construction and demolition sector (as of 2012). There is, therefore, a huge potential here to conserve natural resources and drive sustainability. Over 90% of all mineral waste can be recycled. If, of course, the right technology and processes are in place, such as those found at REMONDIS. Thanks to our recycling activities, we are able to produce top quality recycled aggregate that can be used, for example, to build roads.
There is another advantage to our construction waste recycling activities: REMEX ProTerra has a large network of branches which means it does not need to transport the materials over long distances. By the way, the same is true for the return journey. Once the material has been processed and treated, it can be taken back to where it came from. This not only benefits our customers, it is also great news for the environment as the shorter the route, the fewer carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere.
