It goes without saying that the health and safety regulations prescribed by law are particularly stringent for businesses that work in industrial estates or operate chemical facilities. At REMONDIS, we have gone a few steps further. We have, for example, set up our own specialist Health & Safety Committee, which is responsible for developing internal safety guidelines and for regularly visiting the group's individual locations to check they are adhering to these. These measures have clearly had a positive impact – as can be seen by our accident statistics: between 2010 and 2014, the number of accidents which resulted in employees being off work for three or more days fell by more than 14%.
Exemplary results: each year, the number of reportable accidents at REMONDIS is 63% lower than that at other companies working within the sector
Office jobs can also take their toll on an employee's health. To prevent this happening, ergonomic workstation assessments are carried out at regular intervals to ensure the various workplaces are fit for purpose. Moreover, our staff can also have their eyes tested by our company doctors if they wish. Every two years, specialist seminars are held at REMONDIS for those responsible for health and safety. The first part of the course is led by external specialists who inform the QHSE officers about any changes made to environmental and health & safety laws. The second half involves internal courses which are given by health and safety experts working within the REMONDIS Group who discuss company-related matters.
Never heard of QHSE before? These letters stand for “Quality, Health, Safety and the Environment”
One of our latest projects clearly shows that there is still room for innovative safety measures: our mirror check station. The reason why we set this up is easy to explain. Many traffic accidents are caused because the drivers had a restricted view of the road around them or because their mirrors were not in the right position. To combat this problem, we have created special areas for our trucks where the drivers can adjust their mirrors to their correct positions in no time at all – thanks to the lines that have been painted on the ground. This mirror check station, therefore, helps prevent people being injured or property being damaged and lowers the company's annual repair costs.
